A City Without Cars? The Geography of Access

The question is not whether cars vanish. It is how a city divides scarce space so people can reach work, school, shops, friends, and one another.

Transportation produces urban form

A road does more than carry traffic. It changes land values, parking demand, building setbacks, trip distances, safety, and which destinations remain reachable without owning a vehicle.

What this model can and cannot do

The maps use real urban geography. The corridor and scores are teaching models, not construction drawings or engineering forecasts. One space unit is a simplified slice of public right-of-way.

Read the city before drawing the street

Choose a metropolitan setting. Pay attention to water, regional scale, land-use density, and the transport networks already embedded in the landscape.

Geographic guide: routes and features are generalized for legibility, but their relative locations and urban relationships are real.

Divide twelve units of street space

Remove space from one use before adding it to another. A corridor cannot promise everything while occupying the same finite ground.

Change the city around the corridor

A bicycle lane beside distant single-use destinations is not Amsterdam. Spend six policy points on the larger system that turns infrastructure into access.

Every transport system is tested by local physical geography and human rhythms. Choose one disruption for the selected city.

Send the same plan to three cities

Your twelve-unit corridor and policy package are held constant. Only the surrounding geography changes.

Build a geographic explanation

Select two or three pieces of evidence. The lab will assemble them into a claim you can challenge, revise, or defend.
