Development Detective: Who Gets to Define Progress?

Development Detective: Who Gets to Define Progress?

Interactive Geography Lab 7

Development Detective

Eight countries. Several defensible measures. No single innocent definition of progress.

? When we call one place more developed than another, what have we chosen to value, and what have we chosen not to see?

Step 1: Commit before calculating

Which three places seem most developed?

Prediction Choose three. Use whatever "development" means to you right now.
Choose 3 countries.

Your first definition is now visible

Step 2: Build the index

Development is a recipe, not a discovered fact

Move the weights or use a preset. The same 2023 country data will produce a different order because the values in the model have changed.

What should count?

33
33
34
The weights total 100. Scores use a weighted geometric mean, so a severe weakness cannot be completely hidden by one spectacular number.

Your development ranking

Income, health, and education receive nearly equal weight.

Income and your model score

Click or tab to a country for the evidence behind its position.

Select a country point to inspect its income, life expectancy, schooling, and current score.

Step 3: Alternative indicators

Three rankings, three moral questions

HDI asks about average human achievement. IHDI asks how evenly that achievement is distributed. PHDI asks what planetary pressure accompanies it.

HDI

How much health, knowledge, and income does the average person appear to have?

Inequality-adjusted HDI

How much of that achievement remains after unequal distribution is counted?

Planetary-adjusted HDI

How does the result change when carbon emissions and material use count?

Watch who moves

A ranking is an argument compressed into a number. These countries expose the argument.

Costa RicaIts income is modest beside the richest states, but long life expectancy and relatively light planetary pressure change its position.
United StatesVery high average achievement loses ground when inequality and unusually heavy resource use enter the frame.
QatarExtraordinary income lifts one model. Planetary pressure transforms the result. A missing IHDI value also reminds us that absent data can decide who is even rankable.
Important: IHDI and PHDI are not rival declarations of truth. Each answers a different question. PHDI is explicitly experimental, and national averages still conceal enormous differences within countries.

Step 4: The map returns

Liberia is not 0.510

The number is real and useful. The country is more real. Change geographic scale and the apparent unity of the national score begins to dissolve.

National HDI, 20230.510Rank 177 of 193
Monrovia Interior counties Atlantic coast
A development index can tell us that lives are constrained. Geography asks where, for whom, through which institutions, and by whose history.

Step 5: Explain the geography

What survived the investigation?

Your task Do not merely name a winner. Defend a definition and identify its blind spot.

Your model in one glance
