Food for Thought
A supermarket makes the world look wonderfully simple: everything is clean, labeled, and waiting. Geography begins when we turn the package around and ask what landscape had to change to put it there.
Investigation 1
Can you read an agricultural landscape?
Match each landscape to the commodity it is built to produce. The clues are geographical: climate, field shape, labor, water, processing, and distance to markets.
Look again: Agriculture does not merely occupy land. It engineers landscapes for particular crops, machines, labor systems, and markets.
Investigation 2
Build a grocery basket, then unfold its map
Choose up to six items. Each route uses a plausible case-source region and an approximate great-circle distance to Saint Paul. A real package may follow a different and more complicated chain.
Select products to reveal their supply chains.
Distance lens
A shorter route can reduce transport, refrigeration, and vulnerability to disruption.
Production lens
Yet a nearby product can still use great quantities of land, water, energy, or fertilizer. Food miles are evidence, not a verdict.
Investigation 3
What can a satellite see from the grocery aisle?
Move through time in two teaching reconstructions based on characteristic land-change patterns. These are classified model grids, not literal satellite scenes. Their purpose is to practice the reasoning used with Landsat and other Earth-observation records.
Surveillance warning: A land-cover map is an interpretation produced from sensors, classification rules, and a chosen scale. It can reveal change brilliantly while still misclassifying clouds, seasonal fields, young forest, or mixed pixels.
Investigation 4
Make a geographical argument
A good conclusion does not declare that global food is simply good or bad. It explains who gains, who carries the risk, what landscape changes, and which evidence would alter the judgment.
Data notes and sources
The product origins are teaching cases, not claims about every package sold in Minnesota. Distances are rounded great-circle approximations. Risk flags are qualitative prompts for investigation, not product scores.
