Why Colorado Springs? The mountains form a hard western edge, I-25 organizes a north-south corridor, military and airport complexes create major nuclei, and newer development extends onto the plains. The city makes several classic models visible - and then refuses to fit any one of them.

Every method illuminates by casting a shadow

The final task is not choosing numbers or observation. It is knowing what each method is structurally likely to miss.

ACS neighborhood estimate Sees broad social patterns and comparison across places. Misses block-by-block variation, daily rhythms, informal activity, and some recent change.
Ten-minute field survey Sees built form, public life, language, land use, maintenance, and change. Misses people who are indoors, away at work, or not visually identifiable.
The observer Notices through prior knowledge and expectation. A familiar sign may seem ordinary; an unfamiliar one may be overcounted as representative.

Your final field rule

Never write "the neighborhood is" when your evidence really means "this dataset estimates" or "on this route I observed."

Sources and method. The original second-edition activity paired a local census-tract investigation with a virtual field trip through Colorado Springs. This reconstruction updates that two-part design rather than copying its text or photographs. Saint Paul neighborhood values are rounded from Minnesota Compass 2020-2024 profiles, which are largely derived from U.S. Census Bureau data. Both cities' field stops are transparent teaching reconstructions based on established land-use and neighborhood features; they are not live inventories or Street View surveys.
